CITIZEN COMMEND/COMPLAINT INFORMATION FORM

The members of the Deland Police Department are committed to providing law enforcement services that are fair, effective and impartially applied. It is in the best interests of everyone that your complaint about the performance of an individual officer is resolved fairly and promptly.

The Police Department has formal procedures for investigating your complaint. These procedures ensure fairness and protect the rights of both citizens and police officers. All complaints against police officers are thoroughly investigated. You will be advised in writing of the outcome of the investigation. Your complaint will be assigned to a superior officer or an investigator who works within the Administrative Office of the Chief of Police depending on the nature of the complaint. The Deputy Chief of Police manages all investigations referred to the Department’s Internal Affairs and Professional Responsibility section. In any case a thorough and objective investigation will be conducted and supervised by an impartial investigator.

  • You might be asked to assist in the investigation by giving a detailed statement about what happened or providing other important information.
  • If our investigation shows that a crime was committed, the States Attorney’s Office will be notified and a criminal investigation will be initiated and you might be asked to testify in court.
  • If our investigation shows that an officer violated one of our Departmental policies or procedures the officer will be disciplined accordingly. Our agency practices progressive discipline.
  • If our investigation shows that the complaint was unfounded or that the officer acted properly, the matter will be closed and you will be notified.

It is unlawful to provide information in this matter, which you do not believe to be true.

You may call Deputy Chief Gary Batten of the Deland Police Department at (386) 626-7400 with any additional information or any questions about the case.
