72-year-old man charged in stabbing over bathroom use dispute
(DeLand, FL) - A 72-year-old DeLand man has been charged in a stabbing over an apparent dispute with his nephew about taking too long in the bathroom.
DeLand Police and Volusia County deputies responded to 503 East Beresford Avenue after a male, later identified as Michael Johnson, called 911 to report he had been stabbed and the suspect was still inside the house.
When authorities arrived they found Michael Johnson, 29, with stab wounds to his abdomen and lower back. The suspect was identified as Michael Johnson's 72-year-old uncle, Dan Johnson, who was charged with aggravated battery and remains in the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond. Michael Johnson was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach and is expected to survive.
Through interviews with both parties involved, detectives determined Dan Johnson had stabbed Michael Johnson after the two got into an apparent dispute about how much time the victim had spent in the bathroom.
Detectives learned Dan Johnson had knocked on the bathroom door twice and told Michael Johnson to get out of the bathroom. After knocking on the door a second time, Michael Johnson opened the door and said he had only been in there for a short time. That's when Dan Johnson stabbed his nephew multiple times for being "disrespectful."
Dan Johnson also claimed Michael Johnson had puffed out his chest at him and he viewed that as a threat to his life. But detectives could not find evidence that Michael Johnson attempted to attack nor did he verbally threaten his uncle.
