Suspect arrested in connection to fatal stabbing outside convenience store

Police have arrested a 60-year-old man in connection to a fatal stabbing outside a DeLand convenience store Sunday night.

Police at about 9:20 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of South Clara and West Beresford Avenue after a car had crashed nearby. At the time it was believed the victim, 39-year-old Terrill Zimmerman (DOB: 01/20/1982), had been shot multiple times. Police and medical personnel who arrived on scene attempted life-saving measures, but Zimmerman was pronounced dead prior to arriving at a nearby hospital. 

After interviewing witnesses in the area, it was later determined by detectives that Zimmerman had been stabbed multiple times outside the Friendly Way convenience store at 901 South Florida Avenue. 

Following up on multiple leads, detectives were able to identify a suspect: Mack Smith Jr. (DOB 09/09/1960), who also goes by Michael or Mike. Further information from the public led detectives to a nearby home where Smith had fled to immediately following the stabbing. Police obtained a search warrant of the residence where several pieces of evidence believed to be related to the homicide were recovered. Intelligence gathered by detectives was disseminated to law enforcement in the area and Smith was located and taken into custody.

Smith is being charged with second degree murder.
