Phone Scam alert: The below information/call was received from our daily Patrol event Log:
On 5/13/22 the victim received a phone call from someone claiming to be from “Fairwinds Credit Card” advising that unknown persons were attempting to make a $442 purchase in Virginia. The victim told the caller she did not authorize the transaction. The caller asked the victim to confirm their social security number and mother’s maiden name, which they did believing it was to freeze the account. After providing the information unknown persons stole $4634 from the victim’s bank accounts by fraudulent means. Further investigation required.
The Community Engagement Unit with the Police Department encourages our residents to be on guard to any suspicious phone calls that you might receive from a stranger requesting important personal information such as pass words, social security numbers and account information. Real Financial institutions do not request personal information by phone because of the abuse of fraud and will direct you to a branch to discuss any suspicious activity on your account.
The best defense when you receive phone calls asking you for your personal information.......hang up, then follow up in person with your bank or credit union in person.
