Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who was shot while walking on a sidewalk Thursday night.
Police responded at 10:20 p.m. to the area of South Alabama Avenue and East Euclid Avenue after a man identified as 18-year-old D'avion Smith of DeLand was shot.
A witness who was walking with Smith at the time told police as they were walking a gunshot rang out and he believed that someone was shooting at him and Smith, so he ran to a nearby parking lot.
The witness advised that he heard Smith yell out he had shot himself and to call an ambulance.
The witness stated that he immediately called 9-1-1 and stood by Smith until the ambulance arrived and was cooperative with police.
The gun that was discharged was recovered at the scene and taken into evidence. At this time evidence collected suggests the gunshot wound was indeed self-inflicted.
Air 1 was dispatched to the scene but Smith later died of his injury.
DeLand Police are continuing to investigate this incident.
