It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Reserve Police Commander Francis “Mac” McBride, who passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday morning at the age of 81.
Commander McBride dedicated more than four decades of his life to the safety and protection of the DeLand community, faithfully serving as an officer of the DeLand Police Department. He began his career as an Auxiliary Police Officer on November 14, 1975, and just two years later, in 1977, became a part-time Reserve Officer.
For 42 years, Commander McBride stood as a trusted guardian for DeLand’s business owners, citizens, and visitors.
Known for his watchful care of downtown DeLand, Mac earned the deep appreciation of local merchants and the respect of those he protected. His steadfast presence and unwavering commitment helped make downtown a safer place, and his legacy is one that has been sincerely valued by the entire community.
Commander McBride’s dedication, professionalism, and spirit of service earned him the admiration of his superiors, his fellow officers, and countless citizens who knew him. He will be remembered not only for his long career but also for his inspired attitude, community spirit, and genuine respect for the people of DeLand.
The DeLand Police Department and the City of DeLand extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing Commander McBride. His absence will be deeply felt, but his legacy of service and commitment will live on in the community he loved so much.
