The DeLand Police Department has two new educational brochures available to the public.
The “You and the Police” educational brochure was designed in collaboration between the Volusia-Flagler Police Chiefs Association and the minority elected officials in Volusia County. Its purpose is to educate community members about their rights and responsibilities during various types of police encounters.
The “Understanding Traffic Stops” brochure the legal reasons why police make traffic stops. It also provides helpful educational tips for motorists on how to conduct themselves during a traffic stop to ensure the safety of themselves and the officer. Motorists are also provided with information on how they can give feedback to the department on the professional conduct of the officer during a traffic stop.
Both brochures can be found on the DeLand Police Crimewatch portal at https://volusia.crimewatchfl.com/delandpd under the tab “Forms” and then “Educational Brochures.” Residents may also obtain copies of both educational brochures from a patrol officer or pick one up in the front lobby of the DeLand Police Department located at 219 West Howry Avenue.
Chief Umberger stated, “The release of these brochures is in keeping with the underlying principals contained in the President’s 21st Century Policing Task Force Report/Guide for Implementation. Working with the community to produce educational brochures builds trust, promotes officer safety, ensures fair and impartial policing, and is an act of community policing while still embracing our core mission of enforcement, crime prevention, and public safety.” We are utilizing our DeLand Police Crimewatch Portal to release these brochures to the public using unique technology (the first agency in Volusia County and the State of Florida to utilize this technology).
