National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 23

The DeLand Police Department will be taking part in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 23.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day allows people to dispose of unwanted and expired prescription drugs, no questions asked. People will be able to dispose of drugs in the DeLand Police Department parking lot, 219 West Howry Avenue, DeLand. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, October 23.

Not only does this clear up space in your medicine cabinet, it also helps prevent the misuse of prescription drugs.

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million people misused prescription stimulants, and 5.9 million people misused prescription tranquilizers or sedatives in 2019. The survey also showed that a majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

In April 2021, more than 4,400 law enforcement agencies participated in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and collected 420 tons of prescription drugs.
