A homeless man is being charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of homeless woman early Wednesday morning.
At about 3 a.m. Wednesday, a Volusia County deputy was flagged down by a male, later identified as Jared M. Shaw, 32, outside a 7-Eleven convenience store in the 300 block of North Woodland Boulevard. Shaw was found bleeding from a self-inflicted wound to his neck.
Shaw was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach as a trauma alert.
Based on the investigation, it was determined that the woman, identified as Christine McCaleb, 67, was sleeping on a bench outside the Bank of America with a blanket over her head when she was stabbed several times.
Shaw left the scene after injuring himself and went to a bench near West Minnesota Avenue and North Woodland Boulevard before walking back to the 7-Eleven.
Woodland Boulevard from Church Street to Pennsylvania Avenue was closed for several hours as detectives processed the scene and it was decontaminated.
Woodland has since reopened.
