Drug Take Back Day

The DeLand Police Department is participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration's Drug Take Back Day this weekend.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, the police department will be collecting unused or expired prescription medication in the parking lot of the police department, 219 West Howry Avenue. The drugs will then be destroyed.

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, it is estimated that 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers; 4.9 million people misused prescription stimulants and 5.9 million people misused prescription tranquilizers and stimulants. Many of those people got the drugs were acquired from the medicine cabinet or family members.

Since its inception, DEA's Drug Take Back day has now collected nearly 13.7 million pounds of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
