The DeLand Police Department wants to remind the community about the importance of locking your car doors following a rash of car break-ins.
DeLand police officers received reports from 10 residents saying their vehicles had been burglarized Tuesday night.
In two cases, the suspect or suspects stole a gun from the vehicle. Chief Umberger Jason Umberger wants to remind residents incidents like this can be prevented by simply locking your car doors. Most of the time, thieves are pulling on car doors looking for vehicles that are unlocked and then rummaging through personal belongings.
“When it comes to guns, we encourage residents to not leave them in vehicles, locked or unlocked,” Umberger said. “Guns stolen during break-ins can end up on the streets creating a public safety issue. You can protect yourself and the community by taking proper precautions and securing your car.”
