DeLand, FL – The DeLand Police Department has received a donation of two new e-bikes valued at more than $5,000, thanks to a partnership between Aventon, one of the nation’s leading e-bike manufacturers, and JC’s Bike Shop, a long-standing local business in downtown DeLand.
The donation includes Aventon’s newest mid-drive mountain bike model, chosen specifically for its power, range, and versatility to meet the department’s patrol needs. Each bike offers a range of 60–70 miles per charge, allowing officers to cover more ground efficiently across the downtown business district and surrounding neighborhoods, including Stetson University.
"Number one, this will assist our downtown Zone 6 officers to be able to move about quickly,” said DeLand Police Chief Jason Umberger. “Number two, we’ll be able to show the public how to operate them safely and in compliance with all regulations and the law. We couldn’t be more thankful to Aventon and JC’s Bike Shop for their continued support.”
Headquartered in Brea, California, Aventon has been in operation since 2012 and has grown to more than 1,800 dealer partners nationwide. The company transitioned into e-bike manufacturing in 2018, quickly becoming a leader in the industry. Martin Garcia, Southeast Regional Manager with Aventon, said JC’s Bike Shop has been one of their strongest Florida partners since 2022.
“This donation is special because these bikes are built for terrain like DeLand’s,” said Garcia. “The officers will be able to get around anywhere with ease, and the extended range makes them a perfect fit for patrol and community events.”
For JC’s Bike Shop, the donation reflects their ongoing commitment to supporting the community and local law enforcement. Ryan Flesch, Manager at JC’s Bike Shop, highlighted the value of e-bikes not only for recreation and commuting but also for easing the demands on officers during patrols and public events.
“If this can make their job a little easier, that’s a big plus,” said Flesch. “As a business, we owe gratitude and support to the police department. They’ve always been there for us, and this partnership shows what can be done when the community and law enforcement come together.”
Chief Umberger emphasized the broader importance of the collaboration:
“JC’s Bike Shop has been a stalwart supporter of our department for years. Their willingness to team with Aventon to provide these e-bikes is just another example of how local businesses strengthen public safety. This partnership truly shows what community means in DeLand.”
This donation comes at a crucial time, as the DeLand Police Department has launched its Bike Safe DeLand campaign, an effort to educate the public on e-bike safety. The department is dedicated to this work and to building a safer community for all.
The DeLand Police Department plans to put the e-bikes into service immediately, enhancing mobility, visibility, and community interaction in the city’s most active areas.
