The DeLand Police Department is investigating a weekend vandalism incident in which a racial slur was posted on a city marquee sign.
The slur was observed Sunday morning on the sign outside of Conrad Park located at 555 South Woodland Boulevard. Police alerted DeLand Parks & Recreation to the incident. By the time police and staff arrived on-site, an unnamed male had removed the lettering and given the lettering to city staff.
Tampering with a city-owned sign is considered vandalism and we will be pursuing charges against those responsible. Additionally, DeLand Police are investigating this incident as a hate crime and will seek appropriate charges with the State Attorney’s Office. This type of behavior and hatred is reprehensible and will not be tolerated in our city.
