Wed. 4/3 DPD, West Volusia PAL kicking off wrestling league

(DeLand, FL) – The DeLand Police Department is partnering with the West Volusia Police Athletic League to offer a youth wrestling program.

The season will kickoff from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 3 at the Jackson Gym, 422 South Delaware Avenue, DeLand.

Practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the gym. The program will be led by longtime Volusia County wrestling coach Jason Baker. The program is for students, ages 9 to 16. Eventually, the participants will compete in AAU tournaments.

Police Chief Jason Umberger said the program gives youth another physical outlet while also teaching them valuable lessons. Umberger wrestled as a youth through high school. His father and other family members were also wrestlers.

“Personally, I am a huge fan of wrestling,” said Chief Umberger. “It teaches you so many things including discipline and patience while also building up your endurance, strength and agility. I’m excited to see our area youth grow through this program.”

The partnership is also allowing the city to make improvements to the Jackson Gym, which has been operated by West Volusia PAL since 1995.

The cost to register is $25. Players and parents/guardians must complete a registration form and code of conduct form. Each child must have a completed and signed sports physical form on file.
