POLICE IMPERSONATION PHONE SCAM

On 03/06/18 Blue Lake Elementary School received a phone call from an unknown male who spoofed the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office phone number. The male caller impersonated a VCSO Deputy and asked for a specific teacher to call him back via another phone number. The Teacher called the phone number provided and spoke with a male who identified himself as a VCSO Deputy. The male impersonating a VCSO Deputy told the Teacher that because she missed jury duty she had two open misdemeanor charges for Failure to Appear. He told the teacher that she needed to pay the fines today in order to take care of the matter. The teacher was instructed to stay on the phone with the male while she went to purchase Moneypak Gift Cards.  The male caller instructed her to provide him with the Moneypak Gift Cards numbers as she did. The male then told her to drive to the VCSO District II Office where a Deputy would meet her to get a statement from her.

Citizens are reminded that law enforcement agencies will never require anyone to provide cash, prepaid credit cards or other forms of payment for court fees.  Further, these contacts would never be made by telephone.
