Meet DeLand PD's K-9 unit

The DeLand Police Department K-9 unit is looking to take a bigger bite out of crime with the addition of a third team.

Ruso, a one-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois, joined the PD about two weeks ago while his handler Officer Joey Mulero has been with the police department for nearly five years.

The other teams in the unit include Officer Chalen Godwin, an 18 year police veteran, and his 21-month-old Yellow Labrador partner, Lancelot.

The veterans of the unit are Daro, a 5-year-old German Shepherd, and his handler, Officer Richard Cody, who has been with the department for nearly 10 years.

The unit came together in recent months thanks to generous donations by Dr. Caesar DePaço, Honorary Consul of Portugal in the State of Florida, who funded a Kevlar vest for Daro and pledged funds to purchase Lancelot and Ruso.
