Four police officers sworn into duty
(DeLand, FL) - Four police officers were sworn into service Monday night.
Police Chief Jason Umberger introduced the officers at Monday's City Commission meeting and they were presented with their badges. The officers (bios and pictures below) are Samuel Floyd, Lesley Goins, Kevin Karto and Shannon Watts.
Samuel Floyd was raised in DeLand and resided in the West Volusia area until May 2009 when he left for Army Basic Training (BCT) at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After serving eight years on active duty as a Helicopter Maintainer/Crew Chief he decided it was time to come home and serve his community and his country.
Lesley Goins was born in Kissimmee, Florida and he has been a long-time resident of St. Cloud. Goins graduated from St. Cloud High School in 2006. Goins became a certified Correctional Officer for the Florida Department of Corrections in Orlando. After 10.5 years as a Correctional Officer, Goins pursued his childhood dream of becoming a police officer.
Kevin Karto was born in Hartford, Connecticut and has been a long-time resident of Edgewater, Florida. He graduated from New Smyrna Beach High School in 2012. Karto was attending high school when he took his first job, at the age of 15, in the fast food industry and climbed through the ranks reaching the position of Shift Manager.
Shannon Watts was born in Daytona Beach and she has been a long-time resident of Port Orange. Watts graduated from Spruce Creek High School in 2013 and soon after graduating she went on to attend the Hillsborough Community College where she attained as Associate of Arts. After completing her AA degree Watts continued her education at the University of Central Florida where she attained a Bachelor of Science with a major in Criminal Justice.
