DeLand PD partners with community organizations for area youth transportation needs

(DeLand, FL) – The DeLand Police Department is teaming up with the House Next Door and the West Volusia Police Athletic League to ensure area children in need of transportation can get to after-school programs.
For the past year, the West Volusia Police Athletic League, which is now solely affiliated with and sponsored by the DeLand Police Department, had to scramble to find transportation for children to make it to The House Next Door’s Homework Club, which offers tutoring to students from Woodward and Starke Elementary School.
The House Next Door purchased the 15-person passenger van, which will be maintained and insured by the DeLand Police Department.
“The ability of our small town to do such great things, begins and ends in collaboration. THND is thankful for the generosity and partnership of The City of DeLand Police Department and PAL that has allowed and continues to allow us to serve the needs of our community, “ said Jennifer Nadelkov, CEO of The House Next Door.
In the future, the van could be used to take area children to other West Volusia PAL activities as well as local sporting events.
“I’m very excited about the direction we are moving in with our community. We’ve started to lay the groundwork to build more programs for our children,” said Police Chief Jason Umberger. “The important part is that through this partnership some of our area youth will have a positive interaction with our the police department on a daily basis.”
